Designed for a development partnership, this Single-Family spec home is sited on a south facing Colorado hillside with great solar exposure, southeast views to nearby ski resort of Arrowhead and southern views to the valley below.. One-level living is accomplished with Garage/Master/Kitchen/Dining and Living Room all on the main level. Southwest setting sun is mitigated by glazed recesses on the south elevation and by a protected deck on the eastern corner. The lower living level containing bedrooms and a Family Room walk-out onto patios and a terraced, delineated lawn.
Houses in the immediate neighborhood of this single family residence incorporate both flat roofs and pitched roofs, both desert inspired southwest pueblo architecture, and mountain architecture, and both stucco and wood siding. Melding the styles in one home, a low-slung roof system and wood sided volumes hover over blocks of stucco base elements. Employing “white-washed” recessed niches and mini courtyards on the facade refers to a vernacular practice in territorial southwest architecture that functions to allow protected exterior spaces that are shaded to be not overly darkened by the high contrast of sunlight and shade of high desert environments.

Recyclable materials including milk jugs, bicycle inner tubes, laundry detergent bottles, bread tags and various found elements are assembled into mechanical fabrics. Most dresses work as a result of gravity’s stretching pull on a diagonal grid made into a tube (an enlarged version of woven fabric) allowing the dress to conform to the human figure.
Wear-ability is critical to the viability and concept of these garments. All are designed to be worn for an evening out with the ability to accommodate sitting, walking and dancing. Each dress fits a range of 2-3 figure sizes without alteration.
HDPE plastic, that used in the lowly milk jug, has remained pliable and strong since I made my first mechanical fabric in 1996. The point of the original dresses was not to say people should be wearing cut-up milk jugs every day, but just that the the materials of day to day modern life still have amazing properties and value at the point we typically thow them away.

This Single-Family spec residence, also a design for a development collaborative, is designed to take advantage of a southern exposure and southern views of mountains while neutralizing the visual and sound effect of the highway below. The main level living areas (the Master, Living, Dining and Kitchen), are oriented around an elevated courtyard patio, The stone railing wall of the patio provides a dense screen concealing views of the highway below and deflecting highway noise from the interior living areas. Above the railing wall, sight-lines through tall glass patio doors capture the expansive views to the high mountain vistas beyond.
Southwestern sun is controlled by the forward projection of the Master Bedroom wing on the west. The Garage, Family Room and two Bedrooms are embedded into the landscape as a stone base,. Together with the lighter wood massing of the main living level and upper level bedrooms the composition results in a prominent but anchored contextual dwelling .

Native Chokcherry and Serviceberry branches become three dimensional drawings of figures. Animals and humans are often the subject especially the angular and weighty heard and service animals that are at home in the western landscape.
With legs often buried in deep post holes, larger wood members form a sturdy scaffold for expressively shaped sticks to gesture the finer structures, musculature, and characteristic shapes and features of the subject.
Durable in their use of aged hardwoods connected with heavy-duty construction and structural screws, the sculptures are movable and transportable yet can withstand the seasons, weather and human interaction when installed.
Several sculptures shown here are available for sale and also available for rental for local events. Karl is also also available for commissions. Please contact Karl directly by e-mail: Kruegerarchitect@comcast.net or by going to the “contact” page of this website.

An ambitions venture in relativity small but historic 150 year-old town of Leadvile, Leadville Dentals Center’s Dr. Lance Shcmberger began this project with a seasoned dental architect. Karls job was to take a 4,000 sq ft dental office schematic prepared by Unthank of lincoln, nebraska and incorporate tenant space above and below and morevover define the exterior composition and define the adress access, signage .
While not immediately obvious to people at 10,000 ft elevation level flat roofs have a long history in Main street development of established mining towns. In addition the benefits of providing space for solar collectors and eliminating the possibility of falling ice and snow and ice-damming won the approval of Dr.Schamberger..
